Hillside Science Department
The Hillside School District is committed to excellence. We believe that all children are entitled to an education that will equip them to become productive citizens of the twenty-first century. We believe that an education grounded in the fundamental principles of science will provide students with the skills and content necessary to become future leaders in STEM-related fields.
Sound science education is grounded in the principles of inquiry and rigor. In our classrooms, children are actively engaged in learning as they model real-world scientific behaviors to construct knowledge. They have ample opportunities to manipulate materials in ways that are developmentally appropriate to their age. They work in an environment that encourages them to take risks, think critically, make models, and note patterns and anomalies in those patterns. Children are encouraged to ask questions, not just the "how" and the "what" of observed phenomena, but also the "why".
Our science program provides teachers with science materials that are aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Science and incorporate instructional strategies that are research-based.
